How to file a consumer complaint in India

September 22, 2026

If you bought a defective product or received a poor service and the seller will not fix it, the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 lets you file a complaint with a Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

First, try to resolve it directly

Write to the company’s customer care and grievance officer. Keep emails, chat screenshots and ticket numbers. The National Consumer Helpline (1915) can also help.

Where to file

Whether you approach the District, State or National Commission depends on the value of the goods or services you paid for. Check the current value limits before filing.

Time limit

A complaint should generally be filed within two years from the date the problem arose.

Filing online through e-Daakhil

  • Register on the government’s e-Daakhil portal.
  • Fill in the complaint with facts, the relief you want and the amount involved.
  • Upload supporting documents: invoice, warranty card, correspondence, photos.
  • Pay the prescribed fee, if any.
